Social services department is one of the other national organizations of the government. Social work was started in the country in 1955 but in 1961 social services department was created. Today, the creation of the 1960s has been promoted to the Department of Social Services.


The activities of the Directorate were initially based on city-based and service. At present, this department has expanded at grassroots level throughout the country. Department of Social Welfare, Social Welfare Ministry is working relentlessly to strengthen the social safety net with comprehensive and multipurpose programs for the welfare and development of the destitute, neglected, backward, poor, orphans, autistic and disabled people and the disadvantaged sections of the society.


After the partition of the country in 1947, various social problems were created in the provincial capital of Dhaka with slum problems. Under the Urban Community Development Board, Dhaka, in consultation with the experts of the UN, these social problems were taken in 1955 by the City Social Welfare Office and social welfare council. In 1961, the responsibility for the management of the state orphanage (government children's family) under the Orphanic and Widow Sadan Act of 1944 was carried out under the provisions of the Bengal Vagghore Act, 1944, and the social welfare department was formed in 1961. Later, due to the widespread expansion and widespread social services, the government became a permanent national organization in 1978 and was recognized as the Department of Social Services in 1984.


In the light of the 15 (d) rules of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, this department has been recognized as the pioneer in implementing the government's intention to fulfill the constitutional commitment of different backward classes of the country. Due to the introduction of elderly, widow and husband abandoned female allowances, allowances for disabled people, education stipends for disabled students, freedom fighters honorarium, natural disaster and risk prevention program etc., the role of this director is widely appreciated abroad.


In order to bring various programs under institutional and sustainable dignity and state responsibility in 1960, the Probation of Offenders Ordinance in 1960, registration and control ordinance in 1961, 2011 in Children and Disabled Persons (Rehabilitation) Act 2013, Children's Rights, Disability Rights and Protection Act, 2006 Responsibility for the formulation and implementation of a number of laws and policies, including the special facilities law of women convicted in prisons SE is playing.


The Department has been working relentlessly for the implementation of various national and international certificates or conventions including the United Nations. The United Nations has been playing an active role in the implementation of the Universal Human Rights Charter, Child Rights Charter, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, etc. While working with the Welfare Approach at the beginning, this department is now taking new initiatives with Right Based and Empowerment Approach.


Implementing a number of development projects and programs of this department extends the hand to the targeted population and establishes non-governmental partnerships (limited government assistance in private enterprise initiatives). The Directorate has a self-reliant effort to conduct Advocacy programs through celebrating national and internationally recognized different days and years.


In view of social philosophy and development strategy, the Honorable Prime Minister of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh declared the National Social Service Day on January 2, in the wake of the launch of the Social Service Building in 1999 to encourage social workers engaged in this huge task. In the cabinet meeting on June 4, 2012, on January 2, the date of declaration of 'National Social Service Day' was listed as 'B' category. By celebrating this day, social activism has brought new momentum and life and social workers have excited.
